Pest Control Basics

The basics of pest control is well pretty basic. Prevention is the first priority when it comes to pest control. And it is the easiest, most simple action available to keep bugs away. The first action item to keep pests away is to remove their food source. Any time you have pests in your home, they are seeking a food source. And if you can remove that food source, that is best way to start guarding your home against insects. All food containers should be sealed. Packages of food should be contained so that they are not exposed to air. Eliminate any way a bug could reach any type of food source. Older food in a pantry can be removed. Any type of open source material needs to be discarded or sealed up. This is one of the easiest and most simple ways to guard against bugs. Remove their food source. It may seem obvious, but a good pantry cleaning will do wonders to guard your home against bugs.

It also good to make sure your home is sealed to the elements. With as expensive and power bills and A/C and heating cost are these days, it is really a no-brainer to want your home to be as air tight as possible. But another great effect of having a sealed air tight home is that it will be sealed not only to the elements but sealed to bugs which will do wonders for your home pest control.

Areas that insects often get into homes are holes, cracks and crevices. These can be found in more places than you might think and sealing these areas up will help keep the pests out. There are several places that you need to inspect in your home to make sure they are not open to the elements.

The first place to inspect is obvious but undoubtedly the biggest culprit. Doors and windows are almost always subject to letting unwanted critters into your home. You need to make sure there are no gaps when they are shut. Sometimes this requires new weather stripping and replacing worn out trim pieces. But these are probably one of the biggest culprits in letting pests into your home. Pest exclusion is one of the first places to start when you get really serious about keeping pests out of your home.

Other areas to make sure are sealed are where any utilities enter the home. Our pest control technicians always spray these areas to make sure that insects are not creeping in. But it is always a good idea to seal these areas up if at all possible. Not only does it keep warm or cool air from escaping, but it will help keep any bugs from intruding into your home as well. Our pest control technicians will always spray these areas, but excluding these entry points from pests is always a great idea too.

Some examples of these entry points is where plumbing enters a home. An example of this is a tankless water heater that is mounted on the side of the home. Another example is where the internet cable enters the home. Where air conditioning units enter the house is also an area that could be letting pests into your home.

These are all areas that we make sure we apply pest control on every treatment, but are obvious areas to make sure that are sealed and excluding any pests or rodents.

Another basic pest control preventative measure

We know this may sounds really obvious and basic when it comes to pest control, but removing their food source is one of the easiest and most simple ways to implement pest control.

Keeping your home tidy from having any leftover crumbs from is probably one of the most obvious but biggest issues with providing pests a food source in your home. Doing a good job cleaning up after meals may sound redundant, but it can make a huge difference.

And every couple months, a deep clean can do wonders to keep pest away. What do we mean by deep clean? We mean pulling out the refrigerator, pulling out the oven, and any other other appliances that food could have fallen behind and could be an active food source to pest. Any of these areas are often a major food source to pests and the easiest way to cut down on pest sightings is to deep clean these areas and remove the food source. Not exactly the pest control some clients want to hear, but it is a great first step to eliminating pest control problems.

How our pest control works

And of course, how does our pest control work? We use several different pest control strategies to contain these critters and keep them from entering your home. The most obvious is that we spray an insecticide around your home to keep them from entering your home. But how does this work?

The insecticides we use to spray your home are specifically designed to penetrate the exoskeleton of insects. They are relatively safe for humans especially in the diluted amounts that we spray your home with, but don't go pouring pesticides into a cup and drinking them. When our pesticides are used appropriately, they are harmless. Especially in the areas that we use our pesticides. Yes they all have warning labels and we need to be cautious when using pesticides, but most of the warnings are aimed at the technician using the chemical and handling the bottle in its undiluted form.

We apply the insecticides to the outside of your home which basically makes an invisible insect barrier that insects cannot cross without getting the insecticide on their exoskeleton. This defensive barrier keeps insects out of your home. We also apply pest control in the natural areas around the home with contact insecticides to neutralize any existing pests around the home.

So after spraying pest control around the exterior of the home and the ground around the home. We also spray any entry points to the home. We apply pest control around windows and doors. We apply pest control around any utility entry points. These are areas like mentioned before.... air conditioning entry points, plumbing entry points, cable entry points. Any of these areas we pay special attention to, and make sure the pest control coverage is there to keep any unwanted pests outs.

The next way we keep pests out of your home is by dusting. The obvious ways this is helpful is that we knock down any existing spider webs and remove any hornets or wasps nest. We use special telescoping poles with bristles duster heads and knock down any of these stinging flying insects or spiders that are hanging out on your eves. The areas we really focus on are the front of your home. These are where the spider webs are most unsightly and most are formed around the entry way to you home. We also sweep any eves that might have hornets nests and the back porch/rear entry ways to make sure these areas are free from pests.

But the secret defense to sweeping these areas is what we put on the sweeping head. We put a insecticidal dust on the duster head that leaves an invisible amount of dust behind after we sweep all of these areas to keep the insects from coming back. The dust contains a minor amount of pesticides, but is mainly made up of micro crushed shells that are not harmful to humans, but they are a deadly form of pest control to insects. The micro crushed shells damage the exoskeleton of spiders and other flying insects that come in contact with dust. This is an excellent form of pest control and is very long lasting in the places that it is applied because it normally stays dry in these areas and this form of pest control can stay viable for months and even years. Of course it is ideal to refresh it every month or two and keep an active barrier against spiders and hornets... especially since these insects can be dangerous.

Another form of pest control that is applied around your home on each visit is a bait. We spread an insect bait in the natural areas around your home as a preventative pest control measure. This is just another line of defense to keep pests away from your home. The insects such as roaches or ants take the bait back to their colony and it eradicates the colony... which keeps the pest pressure off of your home and preventatively eliminates any pest control threats. If any trails of ants are found, we will also apply a gel bait that will help eradicate these colonies. The ants being foragers will take the gel bait back to the colony and it will be spread around the colony as a food source brought back in by the foraging ants and neutralize the colony.

And lastly, if there are any active ants or mounds, we apply a contact insecticide down to eliminate the pests immediately. If there are ants or any other type of insect on the property, we apply and contact insecticide that will neutralize the problem immediately.
